Claudia Nice is nice, so nice she’s willing to share all (well some) of her top tips for drawing and painting all different types of trees in her book, Drawing and Painting Trees in the Landscape. Whether you’re out in the wild or sketching from photos, this bestseller has all the step by step instructions you’ll need to get every leaf, branch and twig just the way you want it.
Winter is most definitely upon us and as the nights draw in and the days grow cold it’s ever so tempting to slump in to the sofa and hibernate until the daffs come out in March. But it’s undeniable that the early morning frost, icicles, and low lying sun can bring a whole new dimension to the most everyday of surroundings. Bare branched trees offer rare opportunities to capture wildlife in the fold, weather pushes the rivers to their brinks and a single snow flurry can completely transform any landscape into a veritable feast of imagery for keen photographers.

The pioneering British photographer Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904) is the subject of a major retrospective at Tate Britain opening on 8th September. Bringing together around 150 works, this exhibition will demonstrate how Muybridge broke new ground in the emerging art form of photography.
From his iconic images of animals and humans in motion to depictions of the sublime landscapes and life of the dynamic America of the later nineteenth century, the exhibition will explore the ways in which Muybridge created and honed his remarkable images that continue to resonate powerfully with artists and photographers.
Eadweard Muybridge proves a horse can fly
Muybridge was the first person to demonstrate that a horse lifts all its hooves in the air at the same time when it is galloping along, something that it was impossible to see with the naked eye and was proved through his method of using multiple cameras to take motion shots. His ‘time-lapsed’ photographic work is fascinating and extremely useful to artists, showing as it does the exact position of a body and its limbs – whether animal or human - at various points when it is moving.

Being an artist myself, I take a my hat off to those of you who paint using watercolour. I find the medium really hard to control and after many attempts find myself using acrylic paint for traditional work and the graphics tablet with Photo-shop for my digital painting. After this weekends trawl of the net, I wanted to highlight this video clip. With summer upon us and the urge to get out and about painting, using those long summer days, I thought this clip really highlighted the confidence and skill needed to get out there and paint using watercolour.
Here at rubooks we have some great watercolour how-to books to help you get started in watercolour. We even have the tools to get you started.
Here at the RUBooks Blog we are passionate about art and photography and as someone particularly interested in art, I often trawl the net looking for material, snippets of information, video clips, galleries, other artists, articles to help me improve my skills and the latest news, the list can be endless.
